Need help with new system being built!

Hi there, im thinking of buying a system from www.pcspecialist.co.uk (I live in the UK)

Here are the specs I was thinking about:

INTEL CORE 2 DUO E6600 (2 X 2.40GHZ) 1066mhz FSB/4MB Cache

4096 MB CORSAIR DDR2-667 PC5300

ASUS P5W DH DELUXE: DDR2, x16 slot, 975X chipset, 2 PCI

SATA II 250 GB HARD DISK @ 7200rpm 8mb cache

1024MB GEFORCE 7950GX2 (DUAL GPU) PCI Express + DVI + TV-OUT

500W (Peak) Super Quiet Dual Rail PSU + 120mm fan & CPU Cooler

Im slightly worried if the cooling will be sufficient mostly...

The system comes out to £1376 (2,622.25$)

I would really appreciate any help to improve the system (if necessary for overclocking) while not spending more money. Or even if they is a cheaper alternative other than making the comp myself. Thanks in advance 🙂 !

4GB of RAM = A waste. Just go with 2GB (i'm assuming you're making a gaming rig not a photoshop rig)

If you want to overclock do not get that machine. 9 will get you 10 that the motherboard is crap for it. You'd need to build it yourself if you want good OC potential.

Thanks for the reply, guess I should scrap that idea 🙁 Could you help me get started for where to look for hardware to buy in the UK? I don't know much about building comps so any help would be great, thanks!

You can't find any Seagate or Western Digital 320GB/16MB Cache SATA2 HDs? And what's the exact make and model of this super duper PSU?

The P5W DH is actually a fairly decent board. PCSpecialist are a pretty good place to buy from, not had personal dealings but have heard a lot of good things about them. They build custom rigs using performance parts if you want. Just a couple of questions:

What case will this go in?
What CPU cooler is it?
What brand is the PSU?
Why 4GB of RAM?
Why a 7950? It's known to be buggy and runs very hot. I personally would go for a single card such as an x1900/7900gtx or a dual solution such as 2x7900gtx's etc.

The reason I ask abiut the PSU is because the 7950 is a hungry beast and having a PSU running at peak at all times to provide the current will wear it out quickly and also produce more heat.

The cheapest alternative is usually to build it yourself, but as you don't want to do that you're getting a good deal there.

The case is a:

423mm x 190mm x 435mm

Strong 0.6mm thick SECC Japan ECO steel | Plastic front & buttons.

3 x 5.25 bays | 2 x 3.5 bays | 3 HDD bays.

2 front USB ports | Front Headphone and MIC.

Intel approved cooling vent | Easy access clips | Excellent airflow for cooling

Unforunately it doesnt say the brand of the PSU or what cpu cooler it is 🙁

I am going to keep the computer for around 3 years so I thought 4gb was worth it, but i guess not 🙂

I chose a 7950 because it was a lot cheaper than a crossfire or sli setup and (i think!) this motherboard doesnt support it.

I guess i could build it myself...but is it easy enough for a beginner? And would it be simple to get the parts in the Uk? Thanks for the reply.

It uses the P5W? In which case i retract my criticism.

You might want to check www.ebuyer.com for parts. www.scan.co.uk are pretty reasonable at the moment. www.overclockers.co.uk is a bit more expensive but has an excellent selection of parts.

Making it yourself isn't hard at all. I recently built the rig in my sig. It took me about a day after I solved the memory incompatibility problem (had to downclock but it doesn't matter, still runs everything with no trouble).

The reason I say no to the 7950 is that it is hot and also, there is no need for it. Even Oblivion with the texture packs I've got doesn't need 512MB memory. I personally think you would be better off saving some money on the graphics card and RAM (you can always get more later on) and make sure that you get some decent cooling (I run 2 120mm fans, 1 intake and 1 exhaust and 2 92mm fans, both exhaust) and a high quality PSU. The one in my sig never gets hot, even when I'm gaming but a quality one from Antec, Tagan, OCZ, Seasonic or Enermax would be a good idea for a rig like that.

I'll send them an email and hopefully Ill get back to you about the PSU. Until then, I guess ill look at some of the parts to build my own rig (since I need to do a lot of research!), thanks all who replied so far 🙂

Another question, sorry 🙂 I was looking around on ebuyer.com and Im unsure of a few things (I can research most things easily enough...) but i dont know which motherboards are in the right price range for £1350 system. Any personal recommendations? Thankyou again !

Joe

Well, the motherboard in my rig cost me ~£100 (I think it was a little more but not much). I'd say that you could probably spend around £100+ at least if you want to spend that much. The motherboard in your first rig would be about £165 to buy separately (you could probably find it cheaper, but that's a ballpark figure). I'm a fan of the AB9 Pro, it's nice and stable but the problem is with RAM. If you want to use 800MHz RAM then you almost definately will need to overclock your processor as the board seems to like a 1:1 ratio. I'm sure this will be sorted out with a BIOS update but for now I've had to downclock my RAM which is a touch frustrating.
