Need help with new cpu decision

A friend of mine(I wouldnt be seen dead with an intel 🙂) he has a Abit BE6 1.0 and a S370 adapter card and a S370 Celeron 466mhz, a slot 1 mobo.

So what CPU should he get.

Personally i would dump the INTEL setup and get an MSI-board with a Duron... (AMD= excellent systems for home use)

Cheap upgrade = 370 celeron @700
Way too much money upgrade = anything P3

actually I would go for a Celeron 600 overclock 900 if it is just a time filler
but seriously I would recommend a 750E or 800E

It seems such a waste of a BE6 if you get a Duron+Mobo now and not a P3 coppermine

Czar your friend is in a similar position to me. I have a Celeron 500 on a slot 1 440 BX motherboard. I'm going to upgrade to the fastest Pentium 3E (100 MHz FSB) I can. Sure AMD may be cheaper but their motherboards are still waaay more expensive than Intel's.

Also I don't like the idea of a lightbulb CPU not having auto-shut off when it gets too hot. If anybody needs that feature, it's AMD.

Try running an Intel CPU above 300 without a fan. Hmmmm, somehow i think it will fry also. AMD CPU's run warmer per MHz for the simple fact they work harder than an Intel CPU. Have you seen the latest bench-tests? AMD is kicking Intels butt...

It's still a widely accepted fact that AMD's motherboards are more expensive than Intel's.

Try running an Intel CPU above 300 without a fan. Hmmmm, somehow i think it will fry also

(1) Why should I run it without a fan?
(2) It won't fry. It will shut off when it gets too hot.

Here's an idea: you take off your CPU fan (AMD) and I'll do the same to mine (Intel). Then we power on our systems and see who takes the most damage. You'd better be prepared for a new CPU purchase, while all I have to do is put my fan back on.

Tell that to the guy who fried his AMD because he forgot to take off the plastic wrapper. Or to the other guy who's fan stopped working.

Intel MB's based on i815 boards are not that much cheaper than socket A boards.
