Need help with new computer to power 2405FPW

Current system:
Sempron 3100+
1.5 GB DDR 400
Radeon 9700 Pro
2x80Gb 7200.7 in RAID 0
MSI K8N Neo Plat
SB Audigy

I need a backup plan for a system im currently building to power my new 2405FPW. This will be an upgrade to last another 2 years. I had the following system planned, but with ATI pushing back the release of their hardware again and I'm kinda pressed to get the parts in and assembled before school starts, I'm kinda in a fix. I am NOT overclocking and this is gonna be one of those systems once its built, you seal it up and dont open it for a whole year.

Planned system:
AMD X2 4400+
Sapphire/DFI Crossfire Mobo
R520
2-4GB DDR 400
2x200GB drives Raid0 + Probably moving my RAID array over to the new machine
Xfire once the prices drop

As you can see the Sapphire/DFI crossfire Mobo + R520 isnt feasible anymore.. should I just get a nforce 4 sli in the meantime + a cheap x700 and wait for the R520 before getting a high end card?

Or you can get the DFI SLI-DR and a 7800GTX SLI combo...you sure have the money 😉

Or just get a single GTX for now and get a second one when you can. 🙂

I play EVE Online mainly and I noticed with the ingame fps counter the other day I was getting 7-15 FPS with my current rig at 1920x1200 🙁 . Anand's tests showed that it was mainly CPU limited, but the vid card I think is playing into it too. Thats why I'm thinking i need a whole system upgrade for now rather than wasting more money on an AGP board.

Crossfire is a waste of money unless you already have money invested a X800/X850 series card. If you are buying new and want something with power to spare, I'd lean towards the 7800GT/GTX cards right now.

If you just want something decent to tide you over in the PCIe arena, you'd probably be better off with a vanilla X800 right now (or possibly an Pro if you can find a super good deal). The X700 Pro is not going to be much faster than your old 9700 Pro, so you might as well spend a bit more and get something with more pipes. It might be worth saving your pennies now to get a X800XL, though, since it not only gives you a good card now, but it also leaves you with the option of grabbing a X800XL Crossfire master card later when the R520 cards are on the street. It just depends how much you want to spend now.

I recommend not waiting for the R520 and just going with a good nForce4 Ultra board now and a 7800GTX. 2GB of RAM is definitely enough, so don't think about getting 4GB.
