hi guys, ive just built a new box and am having trouble with it, and a friend suggested i post here to get some help.

first here are the specs:

codegen case and 300w PS
FIC AZ11EA mobo
duron 750@950 (9.5x100)(runs cool, idle at 29, at 100% load for 10 minutes it tops out at 40.2)
256mb pc133 crucial ram
maxtor 15 gig 7200 rpm HD
radeon LE @ 183
sony 52x cdrom
win2k service pack 2

ok, now that thats been said, heres the story. i got the parts about a week and a half ago and built the system the next day. did a lot of benchmarking and ran a lot of gaming demos to make sure it was stable, and left it up for 48 hours just to make sure everything was ok.

then i got to over clocking and got it running at 950 rock solid, doing the same thing as before, a lot of benchmarking and game demos, as well as leaving it up for 48 hours to make sure it was stable. i couldnt get any fsb overclocking done though, which was pissing me off.

so i had a friend come over and we set to trying to figure out what was going on. first thing we did was set the multiplier to under clock the cpu to 650. thing is, it wouldnt boot. it looked like just about everything powered up, except the fan on the motherboard, and i got no video signal or beep from the speaker or hd accessing. we tried 700 with the same results, and the same with everything we tried that was underclocking the processor. keep in mind we hadnt touched the fsb at this point, it was still at 100. at this point my friend tried setting the bridges on the processor to make it a 700. he did it before on his 750 and it made it able for him to run his fsb at 133. no luck, no boot.

we gave up, and my friend decided to show off how 1337 he is by showing me how to change the win2k startup screen. this involved overwritting the ntoskrnl.exe file, and although it seemed to work fine, i just want to document everything that was done that could have
something to do with the problem.

anyways, heres the problem- my previously rock solid system has become leaning tower of piza. it shuts down whenever it feels like it, and im not talking about freezing or crashing and rebooting, it will say the usual "now shutting down" out of no where and just turn off. this seems to happen sometimes when i first get into the windows login screen or shortly thereafter, but sometimes it takes a couple of hours to happen. i tried to reinstall win2k to be sure that it wasnt a software problem, but when i was formatting the drive in the setup program the computer spontaneously turned itself off.

something else thats probably important is that when this started happening, i started sometimes getting the error message "ide controller no 80 cable connected" or something similar on boot. the system loads up after that.

so im thinking that i have a faulty motherboard or power supply. the air that comes out the back of the power is warm practically from the second the machine comes on, and i dont know enough to explain why i cant underclock and why the mobo fan wont come on when i try. the power button on the front of the case is busted, i have to use the switch on the back of the case to power the machine also.

this problem is driving me absolutley mad, and i dont have enough experience to figure out what the problem is or how to fix it. if someone could please help me figure it out i would be grateful.
