I need to connect two computers together. One is running nt server, one is running win2k pro. i'm trying to connect using their ethernet cards with a crossover cable. I set up both boxes to use dhcp, which should give them their own ip addresses correct? the data is on the computer running nt server. when i connect them, and check the status of the local area network, it says that it is connected, but when i look to see what computers there are in the network, none show up. how can i make the other computer show up?

the drives that i need to access on the nt server computer are already configured for sharing...

Unless they're both running a DHCP server, using DHCP to get an IP address isn't going to work. Assign them 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.2 or something.

agreed, just assign them a static IP.

not necessarily...

if they're running DHCP, and no DHCP server is detected... they should get and IP within then 169.254 range.... so they can still communicate ;)

Yeah, I use 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2... you could use the other ones suggested. Just specify your own IP address. Why would you want it automatically fetched? Just adds more lag.
