Need help with network

I just upgraded this guys network. He had 2 computers on it, one computer running Win 2000 Pro, one computer running Win98se. He wanted to go wireless, so I had to upgrad the Win98se system to Win 2000 Pro and installed the wreless network card. Started the computers and had both computers seeing each other. So far so good.

Here's where I ran into problems, I can see the files I'm sharing from the 2nd computer on the main computer though the network neighborhood. When I try to see the files and drives shared from the main computer on the 2nd computer I get a password prompt. Now before I upgraded to win2000 on the 2nd computer I could see the files fine with 98se. Networking isn't my strong point so i'm kind of stumped. Does anyone have any idea how to get rid of the password prompt?

When you upgraded the machine did you do a format/install or just an upgrade?

If Win 98 had a password setup it will be carried over

neither machine has a password on it. I'm not 100% about the first one but when I turn it it doesn't ask for a password. I just hit cancel at startup when the login screen comes up and I login as the admin. When i've tried entering the main computer from the 2nd one I've tried canceling the login box and have tried a number of different passwords. I've contacted the person who setup the main computer to find out if there is a pass on it but i'm pretty sure there isn't.

Might try this....
Under Computer Configuration, Security Settings, Local Policies, Security Options, Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only, Try Disabling it.
Also with Win98se you will probably need a username that is the same username as the 2k machine...

Sorry if that isnt the right option, I dont usually try and remove windows security 🙂

I think it has something to do with a setting on the computer I upgraded to 2000. When it was 98se it was fine. The main computer didn't change one bit, just the one I upgraded. Just for some reason when I try to access files on the main computer a password prompt pops up. I login on both computer as admin, I don't put in any pass at start up, both computers are part of the group WORKGROUP, both computers have an IP address, both computers have different names. I updated everything on 2000 after I installed it. Not sure what else to do.

If I recall correctly, with Win2k, users have to have an password protected account on each machine they wish to share files with. For example, User A needs to connect to User B. When that password prompt comes up, you would enter User A and whatever password you set up on User B's machine. That's what I had to do with my mom's Win2k box anywho. Let me know if you need me to be more clear.

As I tried to state before but Alava said it better 🙂, it can be disabled on XP, not sure about 2k.... it ain't a very secure way to run a network either, especially a wireless one

It turned out at started up when the login/password box came up Administrator needed to be in the login box and password box left blank then click ok in order to see the other computer. This was strange since the account I setup had admin access. Well its all up and running now. Thanks for the help.
