Need help with my scanner

I'm trying to hook up my moms computer to her HP Officejet 6100 Series printer/fax/scanning machine. The HP is actually hooked up to her boyfriends computer, but I can't figure out how to make it so that my mom can open up software on her computer, select scan, and then have the image show up on her computer. I installed the software, but in the control panel, under scanners, nothing shows up.

So whenever I try to scan something or open up the scanning program on my mom's computer, it says that the scanner could not be initialized. I have no idea how to set this up. Is it just not possible to scan something when you are working from a computer over the network?

I tried to add a scanner in the control panel, but it couldn't find the drivers on the HP cd. So does this mean that I have to actually have the hp connected to my moms computer? Would it work if I temporarily connected it, set it up, then switched it back? Has anyone ever done something similar like this?

Thanks for the help

IIRC, the all-in-ones will be quite different than the dedicated scanners.

The aio will function as a printer on a network, but I believe that the scan function only works on the computer attached directly.

Make sure the software is installed first and attach the aio when prompted.
