Need help with my P4B533 and iPanel Deluxe

Alright. I was really curious how hot my system is running at idle and under a full load.

I was trying to use the Asus Probe program, but I didn't think it was giving me acurate results. So, I looked around and picked up an Asus iPanel Deluxe. It gives me temps that are much closer to what I think my system should be running at while I am playing games.

My theory on Asus Probe not working is b/c the system has a few seconds to cool down while I am exiting the game and the temps are dropping. I didn't think my system would only raise 3-4 degrees between idle and full load. With the iPanel it is telling me that I am 6-7 degrees hotter in the game then when surfing the net.

My problem is this:

Whatever I set the iPanel refresh timer to in the bios is how long I have between system glitches. Every 8, 16, or 32 seconds, my system will totally stop for a half second and then come back around. This gets really annoying in UT2k3. I have come to grips with it while I am playing Morrowind, but I don't get into many battles, so I think it will become more of an issue once I leave town to explore further.

Has anyone else used this combo or an iPanel in general on a different Asus mobo?

I want to stop this glitching from happening, but I don't want to disable the refresh because then I don't get accurate readings. Granted, I would enjoy the front USB ports (if I could hook them up), and the front audio jacks too.

That is a known issue with the iPanel Basic and iPanel Deluxe, regardless of the motherboard used. Mine does it too. You may find some home-brewed modifications here that mitigate it somewhat. Bummer, huh? I had the same reasons for buying one, and it's the worst $40 I've spent on computer hardware in quite a while. :(

Yeah

I finally heard back from Asus.

There official comment was that: the iPanel has to interrupt the cpu to swap information for updating the iPanel. This is a limitation of the iPanel and we apologize for any inconvenience.

WTF !?!

Why does this thing need to communicate with the cpu? The on-board sensors do a damn fine job on their own w/o interrupting the cpu. I can stare at the 1 sec interval for updating in the bios or in any motherboard monitoring program and it doesn't screw my entire system up.

What REALLY shocks me is that Asus actually sent a reply! :Q Heck, I sent them a detailed bug report on another issue that I would think would matter a lot more to them, never heard a thing. What email address did you send to? Maybe they just have a handy pre-made reply for the iPanel problem, but not for mine... ;)

I don't remember what email address I sent it to. It was something I found blatently in the open on their contact page of the website.

I read the write-up you linked me to (kinda read it at least) and I am not going to solder resistors into my cable lengths.

I am trying to figure out what the difference in the front usb ports makes for USB 2.0 compatibility though. I looked at the plug on the mobo and the cable I have to hook to it and they are the same design. The only thing stopping me from trying it out is the stupid place they put the USB 2.0 port. At the very bottom of the board and the USB cable for the iPanel is too short to reach it. So, I can't have front USB that works period.

Very disappointed in this product and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Me neither, it looked good on paper, so to speak, but...

:(:| You'd think a company like Asus could do better than that.

I believe USB 2.0 compliance requires a round cable with a certain physical arrangement of the wires inside (twisted-pair data wires inside, with power/ground wires top and bottom). The flat ribbon cable obviously doesn't meet those specs, although it might work fine in practice for all I know. An academic question, since they make the wire so short... I can plug mine into my USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 ports on my A7V333-RAID, but the iPanel must be in the bottom 5.25" bay for the cable to reach. Gee, ribbon cable must be expensive...

I had to "creatively" route mine behind the removeable 3.5" hdd cage in my mid-tower to get the iPanel to work on my P4B533

I only have one extra USB port and it is below the center of my last PCI port. Kinda sucks. The add-on card with my game port/USB 2.0 header reaches just right if I use the lowest slot on my case to install it.

Oh well. No company is perfect. I guess this will make me think before considering buying any of their other products (i.e. lappy parts, vid cards, cd-rom drives, etc.)
