Need help with my laptop

I have a fairly old Dell Inspiron laptop. Recently, I formatted the hard-drive and installed Windows 2000 (I got rid of Windows ME). All seems to be working fine (I can work on word, get on the internet... etc.). However, there is one problem that I cant seem to fix.

A while back, I opened up the laptop to see if there was anything wrong inside (dust, other foreign material, etc.) - This was back when i had windows ME. Since that time, I have always been using an external mouse using the PS/2 Connection, so I probably didnt notice if the touchpad wasnt working. The pointing stick doesnt work either. I thought that the driver was messed up, so I got the latest version of the driver from Dell's website. It still doesnt work. When I went into Control Panel to check the status of the touchpad, and it says that its working properly. Why am i then not able to use the touchpad or the pointing stick?

Just a thought, but does the driver load up with Windows? I notice with my touchpad that if the driver isn't present on startup all the extra features don't work. I have XP so the touchpad still works on startup without the driver, but I'm not sure if it is the same for Win2k. Good Luck!

Im not sure what you mean cscpianoman, but I think you are onto something. I checked the event viewer's system log, and I dont see any evidence of the touchpad driver loading on startup. But I do see that the driver for the modem loads, but I dont see any hint of the touchpad... If this is the case, how do I configure it to load on startup?
