Hi guyz, recently i bought myself a E2160 but it would not run due to dead ram so i bought a new pair of ram but i cant seem to overclock this cpu. It stays at 1.2GHz (200x6), when i clock it to 1.8(300x6) it restarts 3times thn boots the cpu speed back to 1.2Ghz, i have seen " jensinmi" post but i need help to get threw this and dont understand terms like memory ratio. If need be i can post a image of the bois.

My pc specs are:

E2160 (currently at 1.2ghz)
Intel stock cooler cpu temp idle 33/34 load/ingame 36/37d
Mainboard : Gigabyte P35C-DS3R ddr2/ddr3
Chipset : Intel P31/P35
Physical Memory : Corsair 2GB DDR3 DHX 2048 MB (2 x 1024 DDR3-SDRAM )
Video Card : Nvidia Corp GeForce 8800 GT
powersupply: 500watt coolermaster igreen (aka the tree saver ;) )

killkid, welcome to the forums.

Are you seeing the speeds within Windows or in BIOS? Seems as if it is running at the lowest ratio. It should have a 9x ratio. If you have problems with the ratio, you can disable SpeedStep and EIST in BIOS to (hopefully) keep it at the maximum ratio. For overclocking, set the RAM to the lowest speed or ratio, and start increasing MHz. Alternately, look up how to do a BSEL mod. Those chips do well with that mod.

maybe u can be 'killsystem' if u try hard...

the stock multiplier (multi * fsb = chip speed) is 9 on that chip... 9*200 = 1800, the stock speed...

what u r seeing is speedstep lowering the multi to save power... when u go to 300 (300*9 = 2700) it's probably too much with no voltage bump...

u need to find the setting in the bios that changes the cp to memory ratio... if u look in your manual under the bios settings it should be evident... what is probably happening is that the default is 'linked' or '1 to 1' and u are going to exceed your memory's ability...

u really need to read the sticky at the top of this forum...

drop the memory speed, try 266 as the fsb, and see if it will boot... if it does, use cpuz to see what the cpu speed is (u need to run orthos or something to get the cpu to run at full speed...

if it wont' boot, u need (maybe) to push your cpu voltage up...

this is the joy of overclocking... 1) u need to know a little something 2) u have to twiddle a bit sometimes...

happy twiddling...

This chip with that board will be a breeze to OC, I have 1. I also have the newer version of your motherboard and you should have no problems getting it to at least 3.4. Go into advanced settings and disable 2 things: CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E), CPU EIST Function. Then go into M.I T. and scroll down to the bottom and see what your Normal CPU voltage is (vid) and let us know. You will probably get away with bumping the FSB a bit without bumping up the voltage so try a moderate jump like 225 just to see where you stand. Set your PCI-e to 100. And set your Memory timings to what your default specs are to your ram ie; 5-5-5-15 <====== as an example as I don't know what your memory timings are. Or you can just leave it in auto for now. The Reboot. Your system will shut down and then start back up. This will happen each time you change the FSB so don't worry. Once you get into Windows, Open CPU-z ( if installed already ) and let us know where you stand, hope this helps a bit. :)

stock voltage is 1.31250V

I tried to clock my cpu to - 200x9 = 1.8 / triming 9-9-9-27 / standard advanced triming / stock voltage
the pc never rebotted and the monitor never turned on, the fan on the 88 span faster the normal symtons of when my last ram died.
So i cleared the cmos, and now on 1.45 ghz - 162x9 (i think) / timming (auto) 5-5-5-(15 i think) / standard advanced triming / stock voltage
