Need help with my digital camera picture

well... judging by how close you are to them, I would say stand farther away and zoom in... because you're probably doing it from a cheesy point and shoot camera... if you're not, get a macro lens, that'll solve your problem...

and your shutter and aperature should be based on how much depth of field you want, coupled by the available light... or the amount of light you put into the shot (flash)

- my $.02

how high can you crank the appature on that thing? ideally id shoot it around f/8 with a tripod and whatever shutterspeed allows me to meter correctly at f/8

Yeah, definately use a tripod, esspecially if you're not using flash. If you're going to use a tripod, then why not crank that aperture as high as you like.... then you'll have a huge depth of field which equals more detail.

you need a hand held light meter. 😉

I can go to f8 and I have a tripod. going to f8 will make each label clear by giving more depth of field? do I need the flash. I took these in my basement with overhead flourescent lights. Overall not that bright in the room.

Why does he really need increased DoF for that which are essentially at the same distance? I see very little depth in the picture unless you're wanting to focus the background. Am I wrong about this? If so, explain why.

What I would try is this: An increased aperture, a slightly longer shutter speed, a tripod, and no flash. Just my two cents...

beause apature ratings on P&S cameras are deceptive, because there sensor is so much smaller the DOF is smaller through the range, f/8 isnt that huge of a DOF anyway, hseing it will give him more detail then a smaller one and will most liley result in a sharper picture, "most" lenses have optimal sharpness between f8-11, might be diff for P&S cameras tho

also because teh cigars are round useing a appature that has more DOF will ensure the the whole label is in focus and not just the very top

Makes sense, thanks. I'll play around with this on my A80 to get a better feel for it as well...

also because you are taking the picture at an angle the plane of focus is parrelle to the lens, which will cause the closer and further away objects to be out of focus, higher app also helps fix this

second pic looks much better, dont know exactly what you are trying to achieve but it looks good

Dude just set it to Macro and shoot if from 8 to 10 inches away, hand held.

take about 10 shots and I sure there will be one you like.

Just set the dial to M(Manual) and change the manual focus by setting it to nearly as low as it can go, then zoom all the way out and get about 3 inches away from the cigars and take the picture.

that is what I initially did but the farther bands were not as clear as the closer bands

What setting is Macro? I thought M was for maual.

You set the camera to Macro mode by pressing down (under the set button). It has a little picture of a flower. This mode is for up close pictures. At least that's how to do it on my A85.

Ahh, thanks.

Macro mode is sweet. And it's good to occasionally toggle into it for landscapes to. Works well sometimes.

it can still be improved.... I think it's the highlight on top that needs improvement...
what do you need for?

edit: woops
