Okay, earlier I posted about my screwy SiS drivers and how Windows XP would BSOD with a 'STOP' for every boot method possible (safe, command prompt, last known good, etc.)

I came across Q307545 on the Microsoft Knowledge Base and I thought it was a godsend!!! This is EXACTLY what I wanted--I wanted to know how I could get my machine to boot so that I could at least run System Restore and restore from a recently saved Restore Point. Basically, it told me how to run the Recovery Console and delete my registry hive files (after creating backups) and then copying over the setup hive files from the REPAIR folder. Wow, what a great idea!!! While the technote said to delete ALL the registry hives (default, sam, security, software and system) I thought better of it and deleted the system hive only (after all, the problem is with my IDE controller.) I rebooted and VOILA!!! NO MORE STOP ERROR!!! NO MORE UNMOUNTABLE BOOT!!! YAY!

Of course, I booted into Safe Mode and attempted to run the System Restore wizard. Of course, Windows XP in the meantime is detecting all my devices AGAIN through plug and play. Unfortunately, the System Restore wizard kept crashing on me!!! When I attempted to reboot, I could only get up to the Windows XP splash screen (the blue screen where it asks you to select your user profile) but then it would just hang there!!! There were no user profiles to select!!! The mouse still worked but CTRL-ALT-DEL didn't work...there was no keyboard feedback and I couldn't do anything. I restored my backup hives and redid the process, but now I can never get past this screen! I know all my hardware is working now...so what gives??? Are my user profiles corrupted??? How do I get past this???
