Need help with Lite On 40x burner.

THe drive is on IDE 2 and is master (no slave). DMA is on. I burned a backup of two programs I just bought, Paint Shop PRo 7 (286 MB) and Adobe Photoshop Elements (343 MB). Both burns I did with Clone CD "on the fly" with my Pioneer 16x dvd drive.
THey each took over 3 minutes to burn. The only thing I believe that could be limiting my speed would be the cheap PNY media I am using. It doesn't appear to have a rated speed but I know I have burned @24x when I had a 24X burner.
What else can I check?
I also have a version of NEro that came with the drive, should I try that?

Well, it's your media. Also, check to see if there is a firmware update for the burner... the newest version of Nero will speed things up as well but you may have to resort to CloneCD if those programs have SafeDisk2 copy protection.

I believe I have the latest firmware but I'll check their site again. BTW how do I tell what firmware revision I am using? WIn2k pro.

OK
I tried nero version 5.5.7.2. Is that the newest version? The nero site mentions a download that looks lie 5.5.8.0. I'll give it a shot though.
Here's a screenshot from my nero burn. here .
See at the top it says CD-Copy 637MB? The disc is adobe elements and when I look at the properties of it in my cdr drive it says it only 343 MB. What does this mean?
If it is 637 MB then everything is OK to me. But I am not sure.

I have the Lite On 40X myself. It uses "Smart Burn" which examines the recording media and "chooses" what it believes to be the safest burning speed for that particular media. I know Nero uses this feature and also allows you to disable it. I'm not sure how CloneCD uses the feature. It's possible it may be using it at default (ON).

As for the difference in sizes your are seeing, the only explanation I have is when you are viewing the properties, it is just reporting the sum of the individual files on the CD as opposed to the size of creating and writing an image of the entire CD.

if you look in nero under recorder you'll find it at the end of the drive string!
can't be more specific as I'm not at my pc at the mo.

i had similar problem..i updated to 5.5.8.0 and flashed the firmware
solved all my problems 🙂
Be sure to use good media..I have had good luck with the TDK 32x..which are on sale at Staples 🙂

Got 5.5.8.0. Can't seem to get into lit-on site now.

Under Recorder in Nero 5.5.8.0 it says Lite-On LTR-40125S. Is that the version of firmware? 125S????

thanks.
