I'm setting up a C2D + Asus P5B-DLX system with Windoz XP Pro. Instead of the F6 key + floppy method, I plan on slipstreaming (w/ nlite) my Windoz install as my CD is only SP1. Despite reading bunches of threads here on AT and elsewhere, I'm confused as to which storage driver to use for my mobo though, ie. the Intel one or the JMicron one ? Read lots of horror stories about JMicron and Asus boards ...

Current plan : No RAID or AHCI at this time but I want to have that choice down the line.

(2) SATA hard drives connected to onboard SATA #1 (boot) & # 5 (data)
(1) IDE DVD burner connected to the one onboard IDE connector

Install with Intel controller set to AHCI in BIOS and using Intel drivers. Have read that BIOS set to IDE during Windoz install will prevent switching between IDE and AHCI later on (unless you do fresh install).

Do I need to do anything for the JMicron controller ... BIOS settings, drivers ? Concern here is that DVD burner operates optimally ?

Man, things are complicated these days .....

In order for you to achieve 1 and 2 you need to install Intel Matrix Storage Controller before Win install even if you do NOT plan to use raid.

Then once in Windows you need to install the JMicron driver which will enable IDE.

Intel ICH8R can function as SATA or IDE NOT both.
