I have recently installed this drive and find that my no-name mid tower cabinet vibrates quite a bit when I place this drive in a 3.5 inch bay. Is this OK for the drive and other components in the cabinet ? I tried placing this drive in a cradle in a 5.25 inch bay but this part of the cabinet gets too much heat. The drive was getting a bit too hot to touch when it was in the 5.25 bay - but there were no vibrations.

When I had my old Seagate 5400rpm drives in the 3.5 bay there was no vubration problem.

Any advice will be appreciated.

I'd rather have some heat rather than noisy vibrations.. is it really all THAT hot? Sounds like you need a new case! I think that I would get a fan or two in that steam box and put the drive back in where there was no vibrations.. that would just be ANNOYING.. No?

subman, have you considered a drive cooler that incorporates the 5.25" drive bay cradle? I ordered one from 2CoolTek for my 75GXP.

Vibration is definitely not caused by the HD rather it's from your 3.5 bay. Check to make sure the bay is firm (rivet, weld or screwed properly). If the bay is properly installed then it must be the material used being to thin. If this is the case, go with "Greedy's" recommendation of installing it back in the 5.25 bay and get yourself a HD cooler (front fan type) they cost about $10.00-$15.00. Vibration will definitely kill your HD in a very short time not to mention the annoyance.

the 75GXP is not a good drive under heat. It fails under faster than any of the recent 7200 RPM drives.

Thanks for all the replies. I live in a place where it is not possible to get a decent case. The case I use is fabricated out of thin metal. And the 3.5 inch drive cage is held up by 2 screws on one side and a slide in hook on the other side. I felt that the vibration was a bit much and have put it in a cradle and into a 5.25 bay. The drive gets pretty hot to touch after a couple of hours. I think the heat is pushed up to the 5.25 inch bays by the 3 extra fans I have to cool the CPU and the other hardware in the lower compartment. I have seen the fan-in-a-cradle gizmo and will pick one up for this drive. It was a cheap no-name Taiwan make and was priced here at $25.
