Well, the first time I installed my processor, it was running around 30 C and now--after reinstalling it three times, 50 C---- I think I have chipped the corner of my processor(is that related to heat?)I do use silicon based compound and I apply a thin layer to the core and the heatsink. It was working fine the first time I did it... I dont know what to use to clean the processor----Anybody have any suggestions??? I don't know what to do??? I really would like to overclock it but now I cant...
Thx

50c is fine. Mine is always at 54c and i don't have any problems. If you ask amd what temp it should be you will see that your temp isn't anywhere near it.

make sure there is plenty of fresh air blowing on your HSF. ALso if you wanna get the silicon off, CAREFULLY razor blade it off the top of the core, and apply some thermal grease (i use arctic silver, but it's not as great as its advertised to be) If you have thermal paste, fresh air, and a solid contact between the core and the HSF, your processor shouldn't be that hot at the default voltage.

Thx, also does it matter what direction I put the heatsink on the chip????--it can fit in two different ways...

picardal,

The direction of the heatsink does matter. Many heatsinks dont make correct contact with the chip when installed backwards, not sure about the Alpha. Normally you should be able to see the words Socket 462 on the socket when the hsf is installed correctly.

if you look at the HSF and cpu socket, you'll see that one side is farther from the clips. When installed correctly the HSF will be perfectly centered on the cpu. And yes, you want only a thin film of paste, so use a razor or knife to spread a thin amount on the top of the core, then stick the HSF on it.
