Need help with homework (Front end estimation)

Daughter has some homework which I dont fully understand. The problem is straightforward.

Solve using front end estimation
23,734
42,120
12,256
15,607

After a bit of googling it sounds like a hokey rounding. Which would give us

23,000
42,000
12,000
15,000

Then I assume we add these together for a total of 92,000?

Is that the proper steps? Nothing says "owned" like getting beat down by 4th grade math. 😕

I think that's how you do it - just use the first two digits.

Of course "front end estimation" is a total load of BS. Estimation is estimation. Getting a "more accurate estimation" is complete crap.

I agree it sounds like crap. Based on this it sounds like some math teacher decided to develop some new fangled "fancy" way of doing something to get his name in the books.

Well that seems pretty retarded. You appear to have it right, but I don't see the point of talking to fourth graders about the best estimation techniques when they could be learning usefull stuff like fractions, decimals, negative numbers, whatever else you learn at that level.

What grade is your daughter in?

4th

You don't even know how to do 4th grade homework?

Apparently you dont either. 🙂

Well shouldn't she ask her own teacher?

Jeez man, what grade are YOU in? In case you didnt notice....Its HOMEwork. As in, teacher not here, gotta figure it out.

Perhaps you should start back at first grade?

I think we need to change the way we are teaching our kids. This is a horrible way to teach math to a 4th grader.

Well then your 4th grade teacher must do it differently then her 4th grade teacher.

Well its usually best to figure the problem then ask. But hey shes a fourth grader

It seems that according to the description in the link above that 1501 - 100 = 1900 using "front end estimation". You round 1500 to 2000. Unless you round down to 1000, then you get another ridiculous answer. 😕
