Need help with home network . . .

I have recently bought a new computer and am trying to network it with my old one.

I have installed a NIC on each computer and I have a 5 port switch and both are connected to the switch. All the installation went smoothly (no odd errors) but something's not right.

On my new computer, in "Network Neighborhood", I can see both PC's listed, but once I try to access my old one I get the following message. "The computer or sharename could not be found. Make sure you typed it correctly, and try again."

On my old computer, in "Network Neighborhood", the only thing listed is "Entire Netork". I get an error message when I even try to open up "Entire Network" to see my workgroup name listed (its listed on my new PC).

I've tried going through all the trouble shooting routes, no help, I've searched several threads here, and on other sites, no help. I've even reinstalled Win98 on my old PC, and I still get the same errors. I've gone through all the Network Config settings and everything is set the same on each PC, but they're not acting the same.

Oddly enough, I used "Find Computer" by right clicking on Network Neighborhood from my old PC, and was albe to get access to my new PC this way. I'm really stumped here as to why this setup is acting this way.

Does this sound familiar to anybody? It seems like I'm just missing something simple, but for the life of me I can't figure it out.

Thanks in advance,
KYDave

ps. My old PC is a P200 w/MMX and my new one is an AMD 800 system I just built. The network cards are both identical D-Link cards from a network kit I picked up.

Oh yeah, the lights on the switch indicate both cards are working fine, and I was able to transfer files between computers once I used "find computer" but I still want to get rid of these odd errors I get when trying to access each PC normally.

the first you should check is protocols...right click net neighborhood...make sur eyou have tci/ip..ipx/spx..and netbeui all installed on both computers...
make sure you have file and print sharing enabled on both computers...
try to ping the other computer...(from both computer)
hopefully some info was useful...update us...

Did you create new shares on each computer? The default ones, which have a $ as the last character, won't be seen in NNhood.

Not to mention, you actually have to have something shared for it to show up on the neighborhood.

Thanks Sadb0i!

I had a feeling it was something simple I was missing. For some reason I was under the impression that I only needed TCP/IP. I installed the other protocals and it works fine now.

Once I get my DSL modem I get to try to set up both PC's with internet access through it without being open to outsiders. =)

ps. I would have posted this a while ago, but I've only got AOL at home and Anandtech Forums won't allow AOL users to post, Grrrr.
