Need help with HL2 video settings

OK as a lot of us know, valve has now updated HL2 and CS:S to include hdr support and other gizmos like that.

The problem is that the game no longer defaults to directx 8 for Nvidia fx cards - so i'm now defaulted to directx 9!

Now I know you can use the -dxlevel xx command thing when you launch the game. But if you do theat - when you go to the ingame video settings it won't save any changes that you make when you relaunch the game next time.

Does anyone know of a fix? And before anyone cries out "get an new video card!" I can't afford anything right now.

run that command from with in the game console. Don't expect it necessarily to help because my system with a 9800PRO is fubared now and I can't play CS:S (well, only CS:S has this problem, right after the f**king update..)

Ok for some reason it does now seem to be working fine. i.e. ive got nice smooth framerates although it does still claim to be running in dx9 mode. I hadn't changed or adjusted anything. Oh well, as long as it plays smoothly.
