I dont wtf is wrong with my pc. I am running an intel d915pbl mobo, intel 3.4 cpu with stock HSF. My pc has been running fine for the last 4-6 months now all of a sudden it just shuts off due to overheating and right now after it being off for 2 hours my cpu temp is showing 198F. Anyone know why this would be running so damn high?

cleaned out the dust lately? The stock heatsink for Prescotts isn't very good, and they run hot to begin with. You were probably throttling the whole time and didn't know it. You need to keep load temps below 70c or you will throttle. Also make sure your heatsink is still seated correctly.

it has been cleaned out, and fan is spinning at full speed. Also after being off for 8 hours just turned it back on and it shows a temp of 188

Does the heatsink feel hot to the touch? It should with those temps, if it isn't either it's not making good contact, or the temps are being reported incorrectly.

What does it matter? Is it worth losing your CPU and maybe mobo due to overheating?

WTF? Of course it matters.

RaGe420: I would suggest you take the original sink off and make sure it's seated properly before buying new kit. Clean the die and the heatsink with white spirit (nothing else) then use a _very_ thin film of arctic silver (nothing else) and put some good pressure on it.

By the way 198F is 92.22C for those not stuck in the nineteenth century. _Way_ too hot.

Thank you so much, I did that, plus take my mobo out to make sure the fan seated all the way and now my idle temp is around 122 and max on a full load around 160
