Need help with HDD problem...

I don't know what else I can try, but maybe someone has a good idea...

I bought a new Seagate 40GB for a system I am throwing together. I pluged in the drive... booted the computer. and where it goes threw the drive detections, it hangs at the hdd.
When I go into the bios, and try to do a automatic detection, the computer hangs.

The drive spins up. I have tried two different cables. Tried both IDE channels. The system does find my CDrom fine. On both channels. Tried a ATA 100 and a regular IDE cable. Tried it on a different working system. Same problem. Tried different jumper settings. Same problem. Not sure what else I can try. But maybe someone has a good idea that I haven't tried yet. Any ideas??
I hope I didn't leave any more details out...

Oh, and the only thing on the mb is the (nonworking) hdd, vid card, cpu, floppy, CDrom, and memory. I tried it with the CDrom disconected also...

The only problem there is I can't get passed the "recognization of the drives" to even have it load from a floppy.

It works when I do that.

But I returned the drive. Got home.. still having problems...

Went back and actualy talked to someone about it. They said it might be your bios. Come to think of it. I hadn't updated it. It was still set to 32GB limitations. oh well..

Thanks for the thoughts and help... I just thought I would fill you all in and in case something like this happens again...
