I just purchased a Chaintech Ti4200 128mb GeForce 4. I am upgrading from a Hercules 4500 (Kyro 2) card. My current system is a P3, 512 RAM, Hercules Gamesurround sound, Win 98SE, Bostromo gamepad, Logitech wingman force feedback joystick.
I am having problems as soon as windows loads the desktop. My system freezes around the login. When I run in safe mode and switch back to VGA adapter it works fine. I may be having an problem with the old drivers still being loaded (I see some refernces to the Kyro software in my start menu).

Any ideas? I could just put the Kyro 2 back in. It's getting slow with the current and future games. I really want to get the GF4 to work because this will carry me for awhile. Should I start uninstalling other peripherals (sound?) to see or is there something in particular I need to know about this card? Thanks!

Before installing the GF4, you should've unloaded all your drivers for the old card in Windows, and set it to boot with the "Standard VGA" driver. After getting that all set up, boot to Windows, then install the drivers that came with your new GF4, and everything should go without problems. Also, you still won't get very good framerates in games, because your P3 is going to be limiting your system pretty severely.

as he stated its necessary to remove the old drivers

remove the display adapter fom the device manager

when it asks you for the drivers

you want to pick it from the list

then choose standard agp display adapter

it will load then reboot

then load the drivers for the ti4200 and your problems should be over

hope this helps

Thanks,
a question. If I did not completely uninstall the drivers (which I did not) is it OK to remove them in safe mode now (which is what I did) or should I put the old card physically back in and then uninstall and change to the VGA driver? I removed the old device in device manager (after I fumbled the installation) but when I reloaded the Nvidia drivers I got the same freeze.

these steps always work for me.

* Uninstall the drivers from the Add/Remove Section of Control Panel
* Run this Detonator Destroyer
* Click on Uninstall
* Click on either Restart to restart windows or close to shut the program. You will need to restart shortly
* When the machine has restarted, Install the display adapter as "Standard VGA"
* Restart whern prompted
* Install the new display drivers
* Restart again

Thanks I'll try these steps once I get home. If I don't get this fixed this evening I'll probably retore my original setup (fortunately I ghosted my C: drive so I can just restore everything painlessly) and hop back to the Kyro 2 (so I can get some gaming in!)

Then I will just uninstall it the "right way".

What is the "Detonator Destroyer" ?

Thanks for the tip. I found the Destroyer as well.
There's some problem with a driver or something because when I change to anything but 16 colors and ramp up the hardware acceleration in the advanced window i get a freeze. I have determined if I run with the 2nd acceleration setting I can run 16bit colors at 1080X768. If I go to the 3rd acceleration setting-CRASH. If I set the acceleration past the 3rd with 16 colors it runs fine.

Any gurus want to advise on this/ Help is greatly appreciated.I
