need help with gateway laptop

I have a Gateway mt6828 laptop 10 years old. Was working fine till I decided to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 and also upgrade hd to ssd. Got ssd at Bestbuy and waiting for W7 from Amazon. Thought Id install an old copy of Windows 8 in the meantime to see if it was legit. Key didn't work so no big deal, wait for W7. Got W7 and tried to install. No go. Shows boot screen fine then goes black. No problem entering bios. Will not recognize New OS Media. System recovery is non existent on old hd and I no longer have support cds. I'm just stumped, upset and out of things to try.
Any ideas?
 
Best guess would be optical drive isn't reading properly. I'd put the Win7 on a usb stick & boot from it and install.
