Hey guys,

My friend had a crapaq die on him so he wants to build a new computer, but he's going to keep his cpu from his compaq which is a PIII700MHz chip. Now I've been out of the loop a bit on Mobo's and I know Cumines are kinda old now, so what would be a decently priced mobo that would work well with his chip?

I'm looking at this one from newegg.

MSI 694T PRO

It's the 2nd one from the top.

Here's a link to some specs.

So what do you guys think? It's only about $63 + shipping and it seems like a good mobo to use, but I dunno how good the chipset is.

thanks for the help,

Honkey

I think if your buddy is going to keep his Intel chip he should put it on a board with an Intel chipset. You can't beat the stability!

I don't remember much about the VIA chipset but the things I read about it back when I built my PIII rig made me stick with an Intel chipset. No regrets here.

are you looking for a overclocking board or not? If you are not going to get into serious overclocking, the most stable PIII board I have ever worked with is the Tyan s1854 Trinity 400 (more stable than any BX or 815 board I have delt with) (this board has both slot1 + s370). If you are into overclocking, the Abit VH6-II is the s370 way to go (Abit VT6X4 for slot 1). These boards should be around $70-80. Checkout newegg.com & pricewatch.com.

EDIT -- I have worked with many MSI boards (though not that particular one) & not had any problems with them. I don't thing going with the MSI board would be a bad choice either.

ABit BE-6II Rev 2 can be found on the for sale forum at reasonable prices. It's a BX chipset with RAID ATA100. The older Abit BX6 Rev2 is another fine choice for a PIII-700. I'm using both of these boards now with this CPU (now I am overclocking also), very stable and easy installation.
