I got a D-Link AirPlus G Wireless card and Router yesterday. Using its manual, I managed to get them to access the Net properly and they are both working fine. However, I am having no luck in getting my computers to share files and printer between them. Heck, they don't even see each other! They recognize if both computers have the same name but thats it. I am running WinXP Pro. Also, NetBEUI is installed as per the instructions on EZLAN.NET. Also, using the Network Setup wizard, I have set both computers as such: This computer connects to the Internet through a residential gateway.

Both computers have a different name and description. Any idea on what I am doing wrong? In My Network Places, I can see my workgroup. When I double click on it, after a minute or so, I get the following message:

"Mshome is not accessible. You might not have enough permissions to use this network resource. Contact the adminstrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

Also, I have not mapped anything and when I go into sharing a folder's properties and then clicking on Permissions, I can only add users who are part of the the computer am I am physically on, not the remotely networked computer.

Did you enable the Sharing on each drive.

In My Computer Window, righr click on C: choose sharing and enable the sharing.

I have a similar setup to you - D-Link 2100 on XP Home. I can't get it to share either - its Internet only.

When I connect via LAN; files and printers shared. In case we have different issues - have you typed \\computername or \\computername\printername in the File Explorer address bar? The Add Printer wizard did not locate my network printers, but this method did.

Is the built-in firewall in Windows XP turned off for each of the network connections? If you're going through a router for your internet access, you shouln't need the Windows firewall enabled, and having it enabled can cause the problems you're having with it.

what are the IPs for both PCs have you tried pinging to see if they see eachother? You shouldn't need NETBUEI, its slow and inseccure. it may be a user / accoutn issue check the shares to see who has access use the same account / passwor dfor both comps. HTH, Tim

Using NETBEUI is VERY secure on a home network -- it is not routable, it only controls traffic on the LAN. It may have some insecure features within the LAN (not even sure about this), but it does not compromise security from internet sources. For home users with 2 or 4 computers, NETBEUI is not a security concern at all.

All PCs can ping each other and share files and printers when connected by LAN cable, but the wireless AP is accessing only the Net not the LAN (even though it is connected via the router.

The strange thing is that when I set the computer names to be the same on both comps, it won't let me, stating that another computer on the network already has that name. This means that both computers are seeing each other on the network. Also, for the IP, I used Windows Remote Desktop Connection and managed to connect to my other PC just fine. Now, my IP behind that router is defnitely not unique from any other computer in the world. It begins with 192.168... which I presume a lot of people who use routers for home networking have. So, that to me tells me that it is detecting the IP on the internal LAN just fine too! No clue what is going on here...

I finally got mine sorted. One I configured a WEP key on the AP and the NIC everything works. I was previously accessing the internet without WEP but it seems XP would not let me access the network without AP security.

Same issue here....Dlink 624 802.11G router and a wireless card in the laptop. When I used to connect with a physical RJ45 cable, file and printer sharing worked. As soon as I moved it to wireless, neither will see each other on the network. I can only access the internet.

BTW, I have 128-bit WEP enabled, SSID broadcast off, and changed the SSID name from default on the router....does this make my network secure *enough*?

If you can't see your files, chances are no-one else can :)

Assuming you entered the WEP key for your NIC, have you recently hooked up via wire to verify everything still works on the LAN? Got to be a sharing issue. Go back tot he manual one more time and plod through step by step. I found for example on my AP that you have to hold down the reset switch for something like a ten count to get back to defaults.
