Ok I bought a 8000rpm fan to help keep the tempatures down in my machine. It works great but is way to loud. I cant control the speed of this fan. I have tried using speed fan and no go it wouldnt work at all. It kept the fan at about 6500rpm no lower. I tried my fan controller and still no go. If I turned it up to max the fan wouldnt be able to hit anywhere near 6500rpm. and it would stop then go stop rhen go.

So what do you guys think. I have tried multi different slots in my motherboard and still no control.

It is a 3pin fan not a 4 pin.

Thanks for all your help guys

It depends on where you have the fan plugged in. If you are using a molex to fan pin adapter, then you won't be able to control it at all via software. If you plug a huge wattage fan like that into your motherboard you risk frying out the motherboard slot since motherboards aren't really built to handle such high RPM fans.

You pretty much have one of two options:
* Voltage mod the fan (which may cause it to stop working) to either 7v or 5v.
* Install a fan bay adapter.

well if I install it in my current fan controller and it keeps running fast then slow will that break the fan?

It depends on how much wattage your current fan controller can take. The fan won't break but if you're throwing too much power into the fan controller, then the fan controller could break.

You're not going to slow down a Delta 8000rpm fan. Just buy another fan.

BTW these things take 10-20w some resistors can't handle that much.

good question, the highest 120mm I see is like 3000rpm this must be a smaller fan size to go at 8000rpm. I would think it must be very loud.

anyhow, I think this little resister gadget from DX will work:

its this one. I got it wrong my last one (that I accidently put my sholder into cut my sholder to pieces) was 8000 this one is 6000rpm

seems my last one was 6000rpm also not sure where I got 8000 from

Well see the 2nd link there worked and I could decrease the speed of the fan but the first one doesnt no matter what I try

There are some options if you don't mind doing a little wiring work.
Do you know what voltage you need for it to be at the speed you want ?

Diodes will work and are really cheap and can handle whatever current you need. Place one on the positive wire for every .7V that you want to subtract connected end to end in series. 4= 2.8V or on a 12V wire will provide 9.2VDC .

You overloaded that fan header.

If you didnt kill it by overloading it, you should be very thankful.

You are not supposed to connect a fan of that class in a board fan header unless your on a top class overclocking board which can support the required amps.

Get a controller:
http://www.jab-tech.com/Sunbeam-5-1-4-Rheobus-Kit-BLACK-pr-2530.html

Thats cheap and does a very good job.
However the LED's might be very bright to some people.
