Need help with F@H

On XP Pro SP2 I would run the graphical client (cannot get the console version working no matter what I try) and it would typically run ~5-8 minutes per frame in the 250 frame GROMACS core. Now in Vista 64 I am running like 25 minutes per frame on the same core. What's up with that? 😕

Any suggestions appreciated!

Are you also running the graphical client on Vista? If so, which version? The time per frame will depend on which folding project (project 2653, etc) you are crunching even though it's running the same core. However, 6 min vs 25 min is a big difference!

I would un-install via the windows control panel and reinstall. If you would like help setting up the CLI client, I would be glad to help🙂

Note: I'm running the graphical client, NOT the GPU client.

And yes, if I could get the SMP console version to work that would probably be the best but it won't work for me for some reason.

Ok, sounds like you made some attempts to install the SMP client before you installed the graphical client. Perhaps there's some fah process(es) from the SMP install that's interfering with your graphical client.

1) Go to control panel and under the programs icon you will see "uninstall a program". Tell us what you see there. If you see "Folding@Home Windows SMP client", you need to uninstall that program.

2) You could also start the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del then choose start task manager) and then click on the processes tab. Click on the show processes from all users box at the bottom left and then click on the "image name" heading to sort them in alphabetical order. Check out the fahcore_XX.exe running (high cpu use) and other fah processes running and get back to us

I'm just trying to find out if you are running a "clean install" of the graphical client.

If it is a clean install then there's another possiblity to consider.

1) When you installed the XP graphical client, you chose "small WU; less than 5 Mb". These WU's step faster but you get less points.

2) When you installed the VISTA graphical client, you chose "large WU". These can take much longer to process (longer step times) but you will receive more points per WU (up to 500 points).

Let us know what you see🙂

I'm not at my computer so I can't verify yet whether I completely removed the SMP install or not, will check that tonight.

However, I do know that I always check that box asking for "large WU" because I have lots of memory and like to maximize my points. 😀
