A week ago my earthlink dsl won't connect me to the net. No matter how many times i restart the modem, restart the computer, it won't work.

the log on screen would hang on Logging in and then it would stay there for ever.

I was using earthlink 5.0

I also used winpoet 2.1

but the screen on winpoet would hang on "Connecting to communication device. "

after that, it will stay there forever.

So I press the reset button on the back of my Speed Stream 5667 modem.

then i opened it again.

but this time the lights would keep on blinking and won't stop.

I called earthlink and they told me that the modem has gone in reset mode and can only be fixed by Efficient Networks.

So they send me speed Stream 5260.

Now I hooked up the modem to my network card.

and then I launced earthlink 5.0 and it again it didn't go any further than just saying logging in.

it stayed there for about 5 mins or so and a pop screen came up saying " the modem or other connection device has reported an error. "

i shut down the modem waited a minute and started again and launche earthlink 5.0, but no luck.

i switched back an forth between my two network card, netgear fa 311 and netgear ga 620 T.

every time I got the same error.

I tried winpoet 2.1 too.

It kept on hanging and said " Error 651: your modem or other connecting device has reported an error. "

What the heck am I suppose to do.

I have called Earthlink many times but no help from them.

Can anyone please help me. Thanks.

Probably the infamous trepidation of WinPOET.

The best solution is to get a Cable/DSL Router. Even if you don?t have a Network you get ($50-$70), hardware Firewall and independent PPPOE device.

You log on to the Router, in the PPPOE menu type username and password. Make sure PPPOE is checked. Set the router to obtain IP automatically (unless you have a static account).

As long as you don't switch off the DSL Modem, and the Router you are connected "forever" (the computer can be switched off). If you switch them off, when you switch them on again, it will take a minute, and the Router will automatically connect to the DSL ISP.

You can uninstall WinPOET and whatever else, the ISP dished you.

The Router?s PPPOE capacity is independent from the Computer, and it keeps the connection alive.

Working through the Router in a DSL connection should yield faster smoother Internet connection.
