Need help with Earthlink DSL/Netgear RT314/2 PC setup!

Okay, I got everything plugged up, ran the browser configuration thing to get the router set up and everything seems fine, but now I'm stuck. I can ping the router no problem, but not the modem. No internet connectivity at all.

Questions:

1. Netgear said to use a crossover cable between the modem and router, could it be that I really need a Cat5 instead? Is this why I can't see the modem?

2. If it's not the cable, what exactly do I need to do as far as configuring the Network stuff in the control panel and how does PPPoE fit into the equation?

Thanks for any help!

Hi Fausto1.
I live in Germany and also have the NETGEAR ROUTER that you are using. I´m using the Original CAT5 Cable that was in the box between my DSL Modem and the Router. I hooked up my 2 Compi´s also with CAT5 Cable and everything is working fine. Go ahead and try it with the CAT5 Cable, maybe everything will work out right then.
PS The two Compi´s are about 5 Meters away from the ROUTER and both in another direction, so I quess it´s your Cable.!!
Bye from Germany::: Carl

On the Cable issue read this:

CAT5 Straight, Crossover. What is CAT5, which one should I Use?

If you know your ID and PW got No.2

First, plug one computer directly to the DSL Modem. Install the ISP software. During the installation process it will show you an ID number, and Password, write them down.

When every thing is working from one computer, and you can use the Internet turn off, plug the computer to the Router, plug the DSL modem to the WAN port,

2. Start Internet browser, and make sure that the option menu is set to connect through LAN (the original DSL is installed as a Dialup).

Log on to the Router, in the PPPOE menu type username and password. Make sure PPPOE is checked. Set the router to obtain IP automatically (unless you have a static account).

If PPPOE software was installed. When it works through the Router, you can uninstall the software.
