Need help with dual monitors

OK, I've been using a Dell Latitude D810 fr the last six months or so, wth a 19" LCD attached as a second monitor. My orientation is always 19" on the left, laptop on the right. Until this weekend, the 19" always came up as the primary monitor. That was where the icons and startbar were, and that's the way I liked it. I culd unplug it and use the laptop by itself without any problems, then when I next used it, it went back to being primary. beautiful.

Until this weekend. I accidentally plugged the monitor in AFTER turning the laptop on, and now I can't get the stupid thing to think the external monitor is primary again, and I'm stuck with my start bar and icons on the right hand (laptop) monitor. Very annoying.

All the boxes to change primary monitors and the like are greyed out, as they always are (see pic)

Is there any way I can change this back again? I don't want to be stuck like this for the next 2 1/2 years, and I can't change the layout on my desk, as cables can't reach if they're swapped around.

Help, please.

I would uncheck "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor. This should allow you then to check "use this as my primary monitor", I believe. You can then click on monitor #1 (your laptop monitor I'm guessing) and check "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor".
