I just read an article here on making a permanent swap file and I want to do this;however, I am also formatting and partitioning for a dual boot system. I will have Windows98se on the first partition (C) and WIndowsXP on the second partion (D) and a third partiton (E) for backup files.

In the article it says that the first partition is always the fastest and that the swap file should be on the outer layers of the hardrive. If I am understanding this correctly; would that mean that my Windows98se (C) partiton will be faster than my WindowsXP (D) partition and I should put my swap file on (C)??

Is there a way to put WindowsXP on the first (C) partition and Windows98se on the second (D) partition so that WindowsXP will run faster?

I have searched all over the net for info on this but can't really find exactly what I am looking for.

So, if you were setting up a "Single" harddrive (Mine is 160gig Maxtor) with 3 partitions, One for 98se, One for XP, and One for backup and you wanted to put a swap file in the best place, how would you do it??

BTW, I have 1024 mb of RAM.

Thanks you for any help..

Ignore the article. Putting the swap partition at the fastest part of the drive helps nothing because you never do large sequential reads to the swap file, just small (usually page size) reads 1 or 2 at a time. You should leave it variable sized in the middle of your OS partiton, so if you do swap you never have to seek very far to get to the page file. If you can put it on a different physical drive that might help some, but really if you're hitting the swap file enough that it matters (and with 1G you won't be) you should get more memory.
