Need Help with DMA Problems(no checkbox in system properties)

I have my western digital 40 gb hard drive as master on the primary channel, CD-RW as master on secondary, and DVD-ROM as slave on secondary. For a while I had DMA enabled for the hard drive and CD-RW, but couldn't get it to work for the DVD-ROM(there was a checkbox, but when I clicked it and rebooted, it would be unchecked). Now recently I noticed a great slowdown while burning a cd. I ran a test on the hard drive using sandra 2001 and got a score of 11,000. Now the 28 gb drive htey have for reference had a score of 28,000, and I remember my drive used to beat that by a fair amount.

Now when I checked the settings in system properties for the hard drive, there isn't even an option for DMA(the option was gone for the DVD drive too, but still checked for the CD-RW). So I read in another thread to change the settings in the bios from auto-configure to ATAPI CD-ROM for the cd drives. I tried that and the DMA option disappeared from the CD-RW's settings. I tried changing themm back to auto-configure but there still is no option for DMA.

My motherboard is from a Gateway, this one http://www.gateway.com/support/techdocs/references/motherboard/0aasn/0aasn2.shtml

I've flashed to the latest bios and installed AMD's latest driver pack.

So I really have no idea what's left to do, there aren't a whole lot of options in the bios. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks🙂

I had this same exact situation on my AMD chipset motherboard. I checked AMD's web site, and found out this really isn't a problem. According to AMD, there is no DMA checkbox for their busmastering driver in hard drive properties. When using the AMD busmastering driver, if a hard drive supports DMA, it is automatically activated. There IS a DMA checkbox in the properties window for CDROM and DVD drives, but it is of no use with AMD chipset drivers. According to AMD, if you put a check mark in the DMA checkbox, it will not stay checked when you reboot. However, DMA is actually enabled automatically for those drives just like for hard drives. So, your system really has no problems since DMA is working for all drives that support it. You can now breathe a sigh of relief.
