Need help with crashing computer

I recently built a system for a friend. I have built 15 other with no problems at all. Here are the specs:
IBM Deskstar 40 gig
Athlon 1ghz cpu
Epox 8KHA+ motherboard
256mb Crucial DDR

Windows ME was installed and after about a week or so the computer crashed. It had error and would not all a normal boot. Even in safe mode it would not work well enough to do a system restore. Windows 2000 was then installed. I downloaded some of the updates and everything seemed to be fine. It worked fine for me. Well two days went by before they decided to use it and now they get a check disk error. It says certain files on the hard drive are not readable. So basically it looks like I will have to do another install. What could cause this? I know they had downloaded a bunch of files off of Morpheus. Could they have gotten a virus that caused the system to crash and is maybe located in the MBR? Should I do a fdisk/mbr? I did not do that before. It just seems weird. I have never had something like this happen before. It look like a software error too with the messages that are coming up.

I hope you got plenty of $ for building this computer. It will take some of the sting out of all the time you are spending troubleshooting it. On the other hand, if you built it as a favor for a friend or relative you became their lifelong tech support, for free, and you are reaping what you have sown, ie. no good turn goes unpunished.

As to your problem, you don't really give any details to work with. System specs. What do you mean "crash"? Wouldn't "normal boot", what does that mean? Is it overclocked? Have you cleared the BIOS? Have you run disk diagnostics on the harddrive? Have you checked the memory? Are they getting power spikes or dips in their home? Detail and information are a must.

Well it is for someone that is like a second mother. I ran a check on the hard drive and it was fine. I checked the memory by running it in my computer and had not problems that I could see. I guess I should install motherboard monitor this time around and check to see if there is variances in the voltages. The system is not overclocked. I did not clear the bios either. As for a more detailed account of what is going on: The system will not boot into windows. All kind of errors come up and it asks for a system disk. Of course me being the bright person I am did not make a system disk. (dumb I know) That is what I meant by crash. They system will not operate windows propely. I did notice before while installing windows for the second time that for some reason it would not boot to the floppy even thought it was picked in the bios. It finally worked after about 3 trys.
