I am trying to encode digital video into DivX or XviD but I can't seem to get it to work. I have installed all the codecs, got the software such as FlaskMPEG and VirtualDub. However VirtualDub can't handle DV video and FlaskMPEG crashes everytime I select the DivX encoding option.

Suggestions?

What file format is the DV video dumped from the camera? is it an mpeg?

Also, never encode in Xvid, I hate that codec with a passion. if your going to encode use MS mpeg4 v2.

Its a 4min clip that is dumped in AVI...the file is 845MB for 4mins.

I figure if 1.5hr movies are 700mb with XviD/DivX, then a 4min clip shouldn't be more than a few megs.

You can pick to change the compression to any codecs that you have installed.

I already have it. It won't even open up the DV file nor will it capture from the DV camcorder.

right...so? I captured it using Intervideo WinCoder, as VirtualDub wouldn't capture it using the DVCam..it gave this error when I tried: "Error: Cannot find a driver to draw this non-RGB image format. Preview and histogram functions will be unavailable."

And after I ignore that error and try capturing anyway it says: "Warning: No frames captured. Make sure your capture card is functioning correctly and that a valid video source is connected. You might also trying turning off overlay, reducing image size or reducing image depth to 24 or 16-bit."

I'm trying to digitize the footage I taped at my recent autocross event so I can upload it to the forums (this one among others).

Thanks paraduh0x. I dind't realize that I needed a different DV codec. I dind't use the MainConcept one since it has a watermark, but i Found a panasonic one that I am going to test.

EDIT: Turns out the Panasonic and Canopus DV codecs don't work. And while the MainConcept one doesn't show an error, it still won't capture wiht Virtual Dub. that's fine though since I already captured the video using another program. Its converting it to DivX that's a bitch. I used to do it before...but now when I try FlaskMPEG crashes.
