I wouldn't do it. Also depending on the platform the device cannot and will not accept non-cisco SFPs. There was a big problem with counterfeit SFPs and cisco went to great lengths to encorporate signatures on theirs. Devices will check for this signature and flag the SFP as not supported if it doesn't have it.

That all depends on platform and software version. Some will let you turn this feature off, others won't. Also cisco won't support any link problems with a non-cisco SFP.

Ive used them in a pinch, but at the cost, there is really not a compelling reason to use offbrand, the second cisco even has a suspicion that the SFP is the problem they will close your TAC case and send you on your way.

But like Spidey said there are commands to enable the use of third party ones.
