I have owned and loved my Sony Cybershot Dsc-S85 for about 6 years and i love the ability to go in and adjust a lot of the manual settings as well. It is just getting long in the tooth and i need to upgrade to something with higher MP and much longer optical zoom. When i got the DSC-S85 i got it on clearance for $399 when i believe it was $600 regularly. I probably not looking to spend more than the $399 because money is tight. Any suggestions?

Canon SX100 IS 10x zoom, 8MP, image stabilization, under $300

Also, if you're not interested in size as much as capability, $399 will get you a nice new/used DSLR setup that will produce pictures that are a huge step up from any current P&S digicam. But it won't likely have a long zoom lens; most kit lenses are 3x.

You could swing a d40 for 399. Fantastic entry into the dslr world, that's small enough to not be a burden carrying. I had one for a while and it was great until it got stolen... :(

the sx100 has the best interface ever. the little dial on the back rotates like the one on their larger EOS bodies, and just flat out works.

Yup, I would say that or the G9 which can be gotten from Dell for ~$440 with the right coupons
