I have an old 6gb HDD with windows XP on it and would like to transfer everything from the old HDD to the new hard drive, and have everything setup like it was using the old hard drive.

Like desktop icons and program on the desktop how they were before not in the same order but on the desktop.

Any help is greatly appreciated....

you have to leave your 6gb as the master because thats where windows boots from right, and you have to be able to boot into windows usually.

put the new drive in as slave and then do the clone. once thats done, take out the old drive, put new drive in as master. you could put the old drive in as slave if you still want to use the space on it.

i just upgraded a 160 GB drive to a 500 GB drive tonight with Acronis. it wasn't my windows partition though, but same concept. Acronis makes you reboot and it it does the clone before windows fully loads up. i think Ghost let me do it while in windows but i don't remember for sure.

i now have over 1 TB of HD space inside or connected to my PC right now.

Well i put already put XP pro on the 80gb and put it as master with slave present, so could i just copy the 6gb or do I need to format the larger drive again and do it the way you suggested?

if you want an exact clone of your 6 gb drive, you probably have to do it the way i said.
i'm not sure that it will work the way you have it since your old drive isn't the c: partition anymore.

did you get acronis or what software are you using?

version 10?

put 6gb as master, 80gb as slave, install acronis on 6gb drive and run it.

acronis has a wizard to walk you through the steps.
you want to select manage hard disks, then use the clone feature. if this is your only drive and it only has 1 partition, the automatic option should work perfect for you.
if you have more than 1 partition and/or want to create another or resize one for on the new drive, i;d do the manual option. i haven't used the automatic so i can't really say how it works but manual goes through several steps and gives you several options to choose from.

i'm going to bed now, but that should get you set up. if not, there are plenty of other people here who should be able to help.

Currently trying to backward engineer =(

I have the image of the 6gb currently on the 80gb as just a file, so now I'm going to reformat the 6gb with XP then copy the image from the 80gb over to the 6gb drive then reformat the 80gb and then try to use acronis.

So,
Image made and is currently on the 80g
Putting Win XP back on 6g
Moving image from the 80g to the 6g
Deleting partition and formating 80g and running acronis...
