need help with apache and SSI!

i can't get server side inlcudes to work on apache (1.3) for the life of me!

I've already added
Options +Includes
in all the appropriate directores and even placed .htaccess files as well that include that option.

AddType text/html .shtml
AddHandler server-parsed .shtml

have also been added. For some reason, it's just glossed over in the html file. This is what the source looks like:

ahh i wish that were the problem but it still renders <!--#include file="header.shtml"--> as a comment... won't do anything with it.

on another note, i thought that file was depreciated in favor of virtual?
 
Deprecated, no. Virtual is preferred, but is really meant for CGI execution.

One thing that may be a problem, is if you don't have the appropriate AllowOverride setup. You should have an AllowOverride config (at minimum, you'll probably want more) for the .htaccess file bit to work. It should be in your <Directory> directive. If you don't mind, post some of your config (or all, preferably) and then I can figure out what is set wrong. 🙂
 
don't mind at all actually, i'll try to strip out as much junk as possible (this is the windows version btw before you flame me =) )... it's confusing w/o everything acutally because i did have that allow override enabled
