Need help with an upgrade/overclock setup

Okay, I've changed my mind about sellin my current stuff... I'm taking a different route. I want to stick with my current CPU for now. I will be building a new system in a year or 2 but for now I'd like to keep my current cpu - the intel e6300. Also have 4gb of OCZ ddr2 800mhz [5.4.4.15]

So what is the best motherboard for the intel e6300 for overclocking? and whats a good heatsink n fan that will work for that? do i need watercooling?

You say a 5770 is a good video card choice, but which brand(if any) provide the best product/support/cooling?

I am going to be buying a SSD(probably 60gb) - what should I look for in specs/brand? i want speed... of course dependability

I can probably use my 550 powersupply though it's old and the fan seems to be weak... so Im thinkin of tossin it and upgrading that as well.


I want to spend around 400$. So motherboard, hsf for cpu, gfx card, powersupply, and ssd. Possible to get by spending only $400ish?

Good catch on the 2 different E6300's Blain! I always assume people are talking about the 1.8GHz one. 😳

I couldn't honestly recommend buying a new mobo just to overclock something like an E6300. Especially since if you have the 2.8GHz one, you don't really need much of an OC anyway. Save up for a little while longer until you can fit a mobo + Athlon II into your budget.
 
I have the 1.8ghz e6300. It's like 5+ years old, I got it through intel retailaccess or retailedge... forget which.

I need a new motherboard. The pins under my cpu are bent and I'm sick of wondering if it's related to any problem's that arise. Im a hardcore fps gamer and I can't stand little glitches...(www.fortress-forever.com = fastest paced online fps, ctf, team based game out there - HIGHLY RECOMMEND to hardcore only players)

So yea, I'm done with this mobo... I'm tossing it and getting a new one.

Seriously, save up $58 more dollars and get the cheapest Athlon II X2 and a DDR2 mobo, you'll be able to reuse your ram. It will be about 75-100% faster than what you have currently. No sense in throwing good money after bad.

Is this a serious question? There is more to life than core count.

Let's see:

  1. 1.8GHz to 2.8GHz stock
  2. With OCing, top out closer to 4GHz than 3GHz
  3. Better IPC
  4. Able to upgrade to Phenom II X6 or Bulldozer
What more could you want for $50?

So which AMD processor + motherboard would be good with a 5770, and 60gb ssd? I really wanna reap the benefits of overclocking as well but I've never done it and need a little direction. What kind of cooling will I need? Specific Ram or will 5-4-4-15 ddr2(2.1v) 800 ram work? And any specific 5770 or are they all the same? And will my current PSU work? ( ULTRA 550W X2-Connect Power Supply )

I'm aiming for speed + dependability + bang for the buck.. remember I'm on a budget.

As for mobo:
ASUS M4A77D $80 - $10 rebate

Then for CPU, go with whichever of these best fits your budget:
Athlon II X2 240 $57
Athlon II X3 435 $71

The Coolermaster Hyper 212+ ($29 @ Amazon, $40 at Newegg) is a good, cheap cooler.

You should be able to use your current PSU. It's a little weak on the 12V rails but it should be sufficient for this build. You can use your same DDR2 RAM as well. Make sure you get a 5770 with 1GB of RAM. I would also try to get one with the "egg" cooler, as it's really good for a stock cooler.

Okay I'm bumping this because what I have is 2x1gb of gskill ram and 2x2gb ocz ram and it'd be nice to spend a lil more money n have a second computer.

The motherboard I have has bent pins - is it reusable/oclockable at all?? I hear the mobo I have can be oc'd(entering oclock bios) simply by using a metallic pen n connecting a couple spots - pretty simple. dg965wh if ur wondering

So I can re-use the powersupply, buy a cheaper vid card for it and have 2 nice systems running... maybe turn 1 into a server...

My main thing is that im a newbie at oc'ing - will i need watercooling or will a decent hsf be sufficient for a good oclock on the e6300?

The way I see it is like this.
for new system:
psu (antec??) - $60
mobo mentioned above - $80
athlon x3 - $70
gfx 5770 - $155
hsf - $25
4gb ram (already have this)
case - $50 (antec??)
ssd - $110

old system upgrade:
same motherboard(if i need to - ill replace it)
same psu
same hd
same case
same processor - e6300 (oclocked to 2x2.4ghz ish?)
will the 2gb i have work? gskill pc6400 and is it overclockable?
same hsf mentioned in the 2nd post? - $25
gfx - $75 9800gt (nothin major but nice none the less)

total $650

any advice? (or do you need to know the specific pieces of the system?) *i can put em in..

You should be able to do the 2 systems no problem. The Hyper 212+ should be good for a decent OC on the E6300 and Athlon II.
