My sister has a really old computer 1.4mhz or something and I'm tired of always fixing it when I visit her house. I was planing on giving her my brothers old 2500 xp computer which is faster then her's but i noticed that the caps on the motherboard are leaking and the pc not wanting to power up sometimes. I don't want her having any more problems then she already has and I don't really want to spend any money that I don't have.

I was thinking of just just replacing the socket a board with something else but noticed that they cost just as much as something new. If I just replaced the board (epox 8rda+) what's the best one to replace it with or should I just try finding something newer and faster and still be able to use all the parts like the pc3200 memory, ide drives, agp slot.?

I haven't built any computers for years and don't know much any more. Any suggestions???

I have a few hundred I can spend. I haven't been employed for the past 9 months but have enough to do something for her or myself. I considering giving her my old pentium 2.4 and building myself something new from the money in selling hers and some other stuff. I haven't built a computer in years and don't have a clue as to what to get. I would like to spend just enough so I don't end up with junk. For Christmas, my parents just gave me a new LG L227WTG-PF monitor to replace my dying Sony Trinitron and would like something nice to go with it.

If you want to re-use those parts, may I suggest getting a 775dual-VSTA from 3BTech.com link. It has IDE, AGP, DDR, and it also has DDR2, and PCI-E. So you could re-use your components now, and buy newer components for the future, and keep using them.

Then get a cheap C2D-class CPU, you can get E4500 or E2200 from Microcenter for $70 or $60, respectively. Or get an E5200 from NewEgg for $75 or so. Note that you need the latest BETA BIOS to run the E5200, which means you'll need a CPU that's already supported to flash the BIOS. I'm pretty sure that board also supports older Pentium LGA775 cpus, so if you could pick up an older CPU cheap it would still work, but performance is best with the C2D.

Total cost around $100 dollars.

Edit: Depending on the age of the PSU, that might need replacing too. Antec 350W factory refurb (that means tested by Antec), $14.

Isn't that board for intel processors. I need a board for an Amd 2500 socket 462 cpu that I can take out of my brothers old computer. Theirs a Pcchips board at newegg, but the reviews kind of scare me.

Larry's saying replace the board and the cpu for $100+/-. You could reuse most of your parts, and have a pretty decent computer. Not as good as a whole new build, but a very nice upgrade from what your sister's using.

Why not just repair the ePox board?

These guys will sell you a capacitor kit for it.

wow... at those prices, i'd say just buy a new socket a motherboard on ebay for like $40. some are new too.

get her a refurb Dell, if you keep checking, you can get a dual core system for as low as 209 i have seen. They come with 1 year warranty, so for atleast 1 year she can call Dell to fix it if it breaks so you can take a break from fixing it always

Just offering it up. 8RDA boards were classics along with A7N8X and others.

yup, i've got one of the latter and it's only $50ish on ebay new while FIC nforce2 is <$40 new. But I'd say try out the sempron bundle as it should be at least as fast as any socket A cpu. It also has SATA (albeit 150, not SATAII 300) and PCIe.
