bah.....coworkers have noticed how much i surf on AT and now are asking me all sorts of computer questions

today's question:
hi kei!
i just bought an cdrw (QPS Que! Fire External CD-RW 16x10x40) but for some reason it will only allow me to write at 4x.....help!!!

bah....like i know anything....therefore i'm here to ask you guys
he owns a mac 400mhz, G3, OS 9.0, firewire
he tried burning a simple music cd at 16X but received and error msg (cannot receive data fast enough)
then he tried burning @ 8X and got the same msg
what can i suggest to him?

his cdrw model

what speed are the discs rated for? you can't burn faster than that

could be cheapie cd's as well. maybe get better discs(name brand) and update the drivers/firmware for his burner. Also, what software is he using for burning?

he's writing with cds designed for 16X
memorex black designed for audio, data, games

could the decreased speed be due to compatibility problems between the device and the Mac
perhaps it only writes 16X for PCs?
pondering?

My cousin has the same drive and runs on a Mac G3 at full speed with no problems. Is he using intensive applications while he's burning? Also what software is it?

Also make sure whatever software he's using that he's enabling BurnProof.

not too many burners out there with firewire connections for pc's and I don't think the connection would slow it down much

kinda a wierd thing to check for...but check to see if the hard drive can actually transfer data that fast.

What ever burning software he is using should have a feature to run a test to make that everything can run at that speed. He may have a bottleneck somewhere that is causing the problem.
