Need help with AMD64 3200, XP90 HSF and AS5 thermal grease

I was instructed to replace the RM with the one that came with the XP90 HSF. Now I have the Thermalright stuff and some AS5 to choose from. This manual says to "put a thin, even layer of thermal grease on both CPU IHS and HSF base." Can I get some recommendations about how I should apply the grease? Do I need to put it on both the processor and fan, use a credit card to even it out, put a BB size drop and that's it, etc? I have always used thermal pads so this is brand new to me. Thanks!
