hi :)
i just got a 2400+ cpu for fathers day. i have been running a 2000.
i downloaded the latest bios revision from asus, and flashed the bios, however it will not recognize the new cpu. it boots fine in 1500, but when set to 2000, it just hangs.
any help is appreciated,
thanks,
mark

Did you clear the CMOS after flashing? Sometimes old data stays in the CMOS after a flash and screws things up. Check out the K7S5 FAQ on http://www.OCWorkbench.com . It uses the same chipset so something there might catch your eye. And also check the FAQ on your mobo on Asus' site. Even the internet newsgoups may have something. Check it out via DejaGoo...

There goes the :sun: ...

Welcome to the Forums Roadhigh :)

If you look at your motherboard, do you see a PCB revision number near the A7S333 logo anywhere? Rev. 1.01, or 1.03, or so forth? I had a look at the CPU Support Chart for the A7S333, and it is showing something interesting: Model-10 AthlonXP's at the 2000+, 2200+, and 2400+ levels :Q I think these are the new Thornton-core models. Does your CPU's core have a distinctly rectangular shape, like the one on the right in this picture?

If so, you need PCB revision 1.03 and also must update to BIOS 1005 to run your new CPU. Hope there's a happy ending for you in all of this :)

PCB stands for "printed circuit board," the physical motherboard circuit board itself. It's usually printed in small white print near the "A7S333" that's silk-screened on the surface of the motherboard. Look for 'REV. 1.01' or whatever its revision may be. :) Hang on and I'll try to find an example...

Ok, here's a screenshot of where the PCB revision number is on an A7S333: link and it's outlined in the red rectangle. Sorry that's so big, it's about 900 kilobytes. :p

I'm sorry to hear that the board isn't cooperating for you. :( Of the boards on the market now, one of the most popular is the EPoX 8RDA+, which is based on the nForce2 chipset. It has a lot of good features, including USB 2.0, Firewire, and a very nice audio processor onboard, definitely a cut above the norm. They're about $85 at Newegg.com, a very good value. They support the latest AMD CPUs as well as all the older SocketA CPUs.

There is also a version with onboard GeForce4MX-class video, the 8RGA+. If you have two or three matching memory modules, this one can use its dual-channel memory controller to provide the CPU and the onboard video core with a reasonable amount of bandwidth, to the point where you could play all but the most demanding 3D games with the onboard video (which even features dual VGA-outs so you can go dual-monitor). The 8RGA+ is $99 shipped.

When you're looking at the EPoX boards, note that + on the end. There are non-plus versions too. Stick with the + models, is my advice :) I had an EPoX 8RDA+ myself, and I think they made a bad batch or something, because it did kick the bucket on me without warning, and several other people had the same problem. If you're an Asus guy, the equivalent Asus boards are the A7N8X-Deluxe (no onboard video) and the A7N8X-VM (which has not really reached the market in most places yet).

sorry could not remember my log in, i am at work.
well, i already have a geforcefx5600 ultra so i really dont need the onboard video.
what would be the next best choice?
i figure i should have done this a while ago, to take advantage of the 8x agp, but really havent had the money (wife lost her job)
so if i may pick yer brain just one more time :)
thanks again for ALL the help :)
