Need help with a wireless connection

I have a desktop and a ibm thinkpad T41 with wifi "b". My network is wep enabled. I initially had a netgear g router. I had no problems on my desktop which was directly connected to the router, but my laptop used to lose connection very often and show more than one internet connection is available, even though my signal would be the strongest and I did delete the other networkd from the connection sequence. ( I live in a townhome-neighbours also have wireless set up)

I was told it could be a router problem and hence switched to a belkin g. The above problem was solved by this switch. Never drops a connection. But a New Problem surfaced.
This problem is on both the desktop and the laptop. After a few minutes of idle time on the desktop or standby on the laptop, there is no connection. I have to restart the computers to get back online. The router does not switch off, but the only way to get back online is to restart the computers.

I use comcast hsi.

I reset the router and tried it and nothing has changed. I'd appreciate if experts here could share their opinions or views. I'm not a tech expert. Did I configure the network wrong?

I have checked belkin.com for firmware ugrades, but did not find any. I spoke to a couple of my friends and no one has ever had this problem.

Both the hard wired desktop and the wireless laptop lose their connection at the same time or can one work and the other not? If they both are losing their connection, I'd think it was a bad router or it needed a firmware update or something like that. Shouldn't ever lose your connection even if you aren't using it.

Also instead of rebooting, you could try doing an ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew (Win 2k or XP) to see if you can get an IP back. It's much faster than rebooting if it works.

Both don't loose connection at the same time. This only happens if the system is left idel for about an hour or so on the desktop and if the laptop goes into standby. If I continue working on the laptop the connection does not drop off. The connection profile and icon show connected but it actually is not.

I have checked the status of the connection, for example, if it sends 1500 packets ithis situation it receives only 1.

As a result I have to restart. I have checked belkin for firmware upgrades for the router, but there is none for my model.

"Also instead of rebooting, you could try doing an ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew (Win 2k or XP) to see if you can get an IP back. It's much faster than rebooting if it works. "

Could you help me on how I should go about doing this? I'm not a tech person.

Try turning off the Power Saving feature of your nics. Some going to sleep then not waking up without reboot.

Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Network Adapters/ then double click on your nic and search for the power saving feature -- set to disable.

To run release/renew:

Click on Start menu, the click on Run. Type in 'cmd'. Then on next screen type:

ipconfig /renew --- or --- ipconfig /release

Note the space between the 'ipconfig' and the /

To do a release/renew (using Win 2k / XP):

1) Click Start, Run and type CMD
2) Type ipconfig <enter> to view your current IP information
3) Type ipconfig /release <enter> to qipe out your IP information from the Router
4) type ipconfig /renew <enter> and the computer will attempt to re-establish a connection with the router and get a new IP address.

If you are losing the connection only after going to standby or when the computer sits, it might be something with the network card not coming back alive when the computer wakes back up or the router not realizing the computer has come back alive. Not sure if there's any setting in the router to disconnect a connection after a certain amount of time not being used but I've never heard of something like that before.
