Need help with a Thermaltake Volcano 5

I got a volcano 5 heatsink and fan. It has whats called a Thermal Pad on the bottom of the heatsink. My question is do I need to put any thermal compound between the heatsink and dye or is the thermal pad enough to transfer the heat from the cpu to the heatsink?

You only need thermal compound if you remove the thermal pad. Most of us remove that thermal pad and use a thermal paste like arctic silver II, III or alumina. All give better performance than that thermal pad. 😉

If you wish to remove it you can do so easily using isoprophl alchohol and a lint free cloth or napkin.

Blade,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I was anxiously awaiting answer because I'm ready to slap my computer together. I'll take your advice and remove the thermal pad and apply the thermal compound. Thanks for your help.

be careful removing the thermal pad. Dont use a knife or razor blade, use a fingernail or something soft. You can soak it in alcohol for a while to losen it up too.

Credit card works too...
At the end clean what is left with WD-40, it will it clean it all nicely..
