need help with a strange hard drive space problem

i have a 60gb maxtor hd and recently i've been using it so that its been close to 40gb full. what i noticed is that once it gets up to about 20.7 gb left, it says that the disk is full. its very strange because my file transfers will just stop and say that i'm out of disk space, then windows cleanup starts up. i'm running windows 98 and i don't know why it does this. anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this or know whats wrong?

have you run scandisk? ive had the FAT become corrupt and report the wrong drive size/usage. a quick scandisk fixes it and everything is reported fine (this actually happened friday night, finished downloading a file, showed 112 megs left on the drive when it should have been 1+ gig, scandisked and got the rest of the drive back).

thanks, it seemed that it was reporting my space wrong. guess i was using 50gb instead of the 40 that i thought.
