Need help with a rebate problem

I purchased an ATI 8500 AIW back in October that had 2 $50 rebates. I mailed both rebate offers in and kept copies of the forms and the receipt. So then I wait 12 weeks, calling occasionally to check the status because it never appears online. Finally after 12 weeks, the CSR tells me to resubmit the rebate but this time to a different address because the first two rebates mysteriously disappeared in the mail. I do so and wait another 8 weeks and call back today checking the status. The CSR tells me that the rebates still don't show up gives me the runaround saying I should wait another 14 business days and call back. By this time, I'm pissed off and I tell her I've waited 6 months and have received nothing about the status. She responds by saying I shouldn't have waited so long and should have called more often to check the status (suddenly this is my fault?). She follows by saying I'll be rejected anyways because the resubmission did not reach the postmark date for the rebate offer. Of course I won't reach the postmark date because I waited 8 weeks for my first rebates. How the hell am I supposed to know the rebates were going to get lost in the mail?! Finally I just hung up because I didn't want to deal with her.

The $100 is a lot of money yes, but what angers me the most is that CompUSA/TCA Rebates screw many people over and keep getting away with it. :|
I understand that I can contact the attorney general and the BBB but will that really do anything? Thousands of people get screwed out of rebates and these companies still stay in business. Ridiculous.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

TCA Rebates are bad. There is a guy over at the wallet who works for TCA. Check out the rebate forum and maybe he can help. He got one of my rebates that was over a year old.

Yep, there is huge thread and he visits quite frequently. You can also try to PM him. Good Luck!

I would ask here.

Always make copies of EVERYTHING and mail it with tracking.

Yeah, I posted in the rebate tracking thread long time ago regarding this issue but no one responded. I thought I'd have better luck in Off Topic.

D00d, you give up too easily. I got two $20 rebates from Hi-Val for CD-R 50pks which, IMO, is pretty impressive. Not only were the rebates for Hi-Val products but Hi-Val basically went out of business and was bought out by I/O Magic. I got the $40 out of I/O Magic by calling and complaining to OfficeMax about fraud and how disappointed I am about how they do business with these types of people. 2 weeks later I had my rebates.

Moral of the story. Call as many people to complain as possible and get as high up the corporate ladder as possible on each call.

Tracking is almost useless. It was talked about and the guy from TCA basically said that having someone sign for it or sending it in anything different than a regular envelope slows the processing time down. They don't sign for the rebates, the PO just scans them as delivered. If you can't get them to say they ever got the rebate over the phone and it doesn't show up, you are up the creek. You can take all the paper work to where you bought it and they might give the the money back for the rebate.

Get on the Phone with a CSR.
Get A Fax # and person to address the fax to.
Send it - do not bother with the mail.

After 1 day, call and ask for the person that the fax was sent to. Confirm that they got it. If not, have them provide a Fax number and tell them that you will call back within 1 hour to confirm it.
Also, contact the manufacturor CSR and notify them of what is going on.
If also does not hurt to let the store CSR know what is going on.

Some-one will have to crack. Just make sure that it is not you.

I was once put on the line with a $50 rebate on a out of business company, purchased the power supply from CRAPUSA and I mailed everything in. After 10 weeks I was pissed and no one seems to care at TCA. So I took my papers and head down to CRAPUSA, demanding a rebate. They gave me the run around and told me to call the rebate center. :| I was pissed and called the CRAPUSA rebate center and spoke with a manager regrading problems I have been having. 2 weeks later I got my check. then 3 weeks later i got 2 more check with the same amount 😀
