need help with a laptop problem

Ok, so my girlfriends laptop freezes after you leave it there for a while, maybe 30 minutes.

I figure she needs to format and clean it up after having it for a while. After I format and install some software, it still freezes every now and then. Could it be the cooling? Think one of those notebook cooling pads would work?

It may be an overheating issue; if it's left without anything running, it should'nt be a problem.
First, I would scan for adware. Microsoft Spyware-remover does a pretty good job; if you don't have it installed already, you should do so as soon as possible.
Then, check the stuff you have running. Use the "end process" function that you get when you press control-alt-delete on anything that's unecessary; i.e.; Realplayer or that screensaver with the fuzzy kittens. (They'll come right back when you restart the computer.) Then, leave it for 30 minutes.
If it still goes kaput, kill all extraneous processes, and put it on top of some sort of cooling device. (Antec and several other manufacturers make rather nice notebook coolers; alternately; a box fan should do the trick if it's blowing away from the laptop.) If this helps at all, you know it's a heating issue.

You need to post specs : OS, Model#, installed apps..etc so we can help you better. Without being informed about anything else, my theory would be that it's a harddrive issue, but again I need more info to validate any claims.
