Innovating in a Flat World
There is a line from Thomas Friedman's latest book ? The World is Flat ? that sums the debate on globalization and the central role ordained to India. Friedman quotes Infosys honcho Nandan Nilikeni commenting on this phenomenon: "Tom, the playing field is being leveled." And then Friedman goes on to explain, "He meant that countries like India are now able to compete for global knowledge work as never before ? and that America better get ready for this." In his inimitable style, Friedman had summed up the pivotal spot that India (along with other emerging markets) finds itself in the early years of the millennium.
?Global knowledge work? refers primarily to the seamless processing of information into data at different global locations, usually tailored for maximum efficiency. My career, my future plans and interests have primarily revolved around global knowledge work and or similar fields. My short term career plan is gain job experience in the integration and maximizing the efficiency of international marketing with information technology. I have tailored my choice to jobs to reflect my interests, for example: my present position with Living Media. It involves the management of ads in licensed magazines like Golf Digest Gulf and Men?s Health India that are distributed globally with international advertisers ? yet the magazines are collated and printed in India and the marketing material is completely handled electronically until print. By integrating our advertisers and printers in a closed loop system, we have been able to extend deadlines, reduce response times and errors in communications related to material specifications.
At the risk of sounding cliché, my long term professional goal is to launch my own company ? setup up as an information portal & reseller for international intellectual property, patent and trademark information. After toying with the concept in college in several different projects related to business law and technology, I had the opportunity to work in Landon & Stark Associates, an information property information reseller company which catered to several international firms, which gave me a detailed insight of the industry. As is the trend with global knowledge work, I would leverage India?s competitive advantage of cheap labor and an educated work force. However, the company?s vision would to be maximize efficiency for intellectual property law firms with needs for large amounts of time critical information. The recent Blackberry case along with others has demonstrated the existence of demand for such a service and I?m confident that a company catering to that demand will be successful.
