need help with a geforce DDR!!!

I am trying to step up to a blue orb on my geforce, and I am wondering what the best applicator is on the chip ....

silver compound?
Thermal tape?

also, does anyone have any good reasons for using the 6.3x series drivers over the 6.27 (which I found to be very stable...)
